I have a natural light lamp at home that I use in my craft room. I just might have to take it to work to use there instead. I hate the lack of natural light so much!

I read some of your other articles and funny that I had already implemented a lot of those ideas 3 years ago when I first moved to the cubicle I just moved out of. I made my cubicle look more homey by adding a lamp I bought at Ikea. It has a pretty aqua blue lampshade. I have received so many compliments on it. I also had those plastic clips that hook into the fabric walls. I have a white erase board outside my cubicle that I used velcro to adhere to the wall. I really wanted it to look more home-like since I spend so much time there (as you mentioned you do as well!) I am heading into my 22nd year in Cubicle Nation!

      Hi Marsha,
It sounds like you’re ahead of the game. Due to the decrease in the amount of cubicles out there in the world these days, I have tended to refocus my site to deal with all offices and not primarily cubicles. Open offices have sprung up all over the place due to cost and supposed enhanced productivity (although I really don’t believe that is true). My company still uses cubicles but the new ones tend to be cubicles with low walls, at least for the sales-related employees. In my department, which is software development, we still have the taller walls due to the need to focus.
I hope you continue to enjoy the site. You may want to sign up for the eBook because that will put you on an automated email list and you’ll receive, on a sporadic interval, some of the older, popular articles as well.

Wow, 22 years in Cubicle Nation. I think I got you beat. 🙂

      Best,
      Bob

I just came across your site as I was searching on what to use to hang pictures on the fabric cubicle walls! I was forced to move up one floor a little over a month ago. I wasn’t happy at all about leaving my previous space as there were gorgeous, huge windows across the aisle from me that let in a lot of natural light and I could people watch down below. Now I am stuck in cubicle island where the view out my cubicle is a wall and the windows are on the far end with not nearly as much light coming through. I’m trying to decorate my space so it’s not as dismal! Thanks for all the great ideas!

      Hi Marsha,
Welcome! I feel your pain. You may want to read this article as it plays out the same way that your scenario played out. I’ve been in a cubicle for most of my working life (which is a while! :-)) so I can certainly understand your life in Cubicle Nation. Good luck with your decorating in your new cubicle. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

      Best,
      Bob

Hi Bob…gotta say this is the most well equipped and organized cubicle I have seen. And I have seen a lot over past 15 years. Question about ergonomics. What type of office chair do you use?

How could you work in the same cubicle space if you decided to stand or use a ergo ball versus tradition sitting in a chair?

    • bob

      Hi Sid,
You can see my latest home office chair in this article. You can also see my office chair in my cubicle at work. I think I could work in the same space if I decided to stand or use an ergo ball.

      Thanks for your comment.
      Best,
      Bob

The position of the computer screen is appropriate for the eye level. The rest of items are accessible and makes working more fun. Everything is within reach and I believe this can increase productivity.

    • bob

Jon, you make some really good points. Accessibility in your working space is extremely important, even in a small office or cubicle. Also, every worker should be trained in the rules of ergonomics as this is so important to keep workers in their jobs as well as being productive. If you’d ever like to guest post on my site, shoot me an email at [email protected].

      Best,
      Bob

I remember when I used to work in a cubicle, at first it looked so depressing, that I basically had no motivation to go to work. But after some time I got used to it, and once you add a few personal items, the place changes completely, it feels homey and snug. I even kinda miss it right now.

    • bob

      Hi Jane,
I actually love my cubicle and will take it over an open workspace any day! I’ve made my home-away-from-home as appealing as possible and am always looking for ways to improve it every day. I also enjoy helping others who live in cubicles do the same. Thanks so much for your contribution. 🙂

What an awesome transformation! I think my favorites are the sunlamp (I have to have sun, otherwise winters are beyond difficult) and the Executive sandbox. I’m going to have to go and find both of those for my office.

Nice move taking what might have been a negative and turning it into a positive opportunity!

Thanks Bobbi! I actually replaced the sunlamp with this lamp and I absolutely love it!
