Many years ago my wife and I moved to northern New Hampshire to a house in the White Mountain region. We’ve always had a passion for the mountains and have tried to avoid areas which are especially hectic as far as traffic is concerned.
We like to kayak on nearby lakes, hike on local trails, and basically enjoy the fresh air that the mountain life aesthetic provides. We’ve tried to furnish our home with the mountain aesthetic home décor in mind.
Our modern mountain home has a special charm that blends nature, warmth, and rustic character. The right modern mountain home decor can make a mountain house feel even more inviting, turning it into a cozy retreat that celebrates the surrounding landscape.
These decorating ideas highlight simple ways to bring mountain life indoors using natural textures, wildlife themes, and warm lighting.
1. Add Rustic Lamps with Nature-Inspired Details

Lighting sets the tone in a mountain home. A lamp with a pine tree patterned shade and antler-style base adds warm light while bringing forest-inspired charm to a bedside table or reading nook.
2. Install Statement Chandeliers with Cabin Character

A large metal chandelier with candle-style bulbs creates a striking focal point under exposed wood ceilings. This style complements rustic beams and adds lodge-inspired elegance to dining or living spaces.
3. Anchor the Room with a Stone Fireplace

A natural stone fireplace instantly creates the heart of a mountain home. We actually had this fireplace built from scratch. Prior to us moving in, there was an ugly woodstove in this location that had to be removed.
We decorate the mantel with personal artifacts and mountain-related souvenirs that we have purchased over the years to give the space personality and warmth.
4. Bring Nature Indoors with Hanging Plants

A suspended spider plant near large windows softens the rustic wood tones and adds life to the room. Greenery balances out the solid textures often found in mountain homes like wood and stone.
5. Use Artistic Lighting as Functional Decor

Unique chandeliers decorated with colorful beads or glass pieces create artistic focal points. My wife created this masterpiece from an old ugly chandelier we had previously.
A creative lighting fixture can add personality and become a conversation pieces in rustic interiors. This particular piece also adds a pop of color in contrast to all of the wood furnishings and texture.
6. Display Books and Meaningful Signs

Shelves filled with books and meaningful quotes add a personal touch when it comes to mountain decorating ideas. The sign above reflects our feelings about mountain living and help reinforce the peaceful, nature-centered lifestyle of a mountain home.
7. Incorporate Nature Photography and Woodland Art

We enjoy taking our own pictures since we have a grand landscape and environment in and around our home in the mountains.
My wife took this shot of a Barred Owl on a tree outside our dining room window. We love to see the animals like red and grey squirrels, chipmunks, racoons, deer, and even black bear wandering in our yard.
8. Hang Rustic Antique Art Creations

We oftentimes come across antique finds and create unique hangings from those finds. The decorative piece below is one of those handmade creations.
This creation hangs just above our kitchen island. It doesn’t emit any light as we have plenty of light sources in our kitchen already. It is simply to showcase homemade artwork.
9. Showcase Handmade Wood Wall Art

We love to go to farmers markets which are plentiful where we live. At those events, oftentimes there are local artists or craftsmen who are selling their wares.
This carved wood art piece is of the “Old Man of the Mountain” which was a famous granite rock formation in New Hampshire. In 2003 it collapsed due to erosion from the elements.
We have it hanging on a beam in the center of our home and oftentimes garners many favorable comments from visitors. The piece is created from a number of jigsaw-like pieces that have been clued together to represent the rock faces of the mountain.
10. Use Wildlife Silhouettes as Decorative Accents

Metal wall decor featuring bears, trees, and woodland scenes reinforces and highlights the mountain theme. These metallic pieces of art have become very popular these days.
We picked this up at a local store and thought it worked in perfectly with our mountain home decorating theme. These small accents help tie the room together without overwhelming the space.
11. Add Wildlife Artwork for Cabin Style

Canvas artwork featuring animals like moose helps create an authentic mountain lodge atmosphere. Wildlife imagery pairs beautifully with wood interiors and rustic textures.
We picked this hanging canvas up at another local curiosity shop near a ski area. We oftentimes see moose in our area and you’d be surprised at how massive they are.
Mountain living is certainly a drastic change from city living. I’ve experienced both and I’ll take my mountain air over city smog every day of the week.
Mountain home decorating is all about embracing warmth, nature, and personal character. From rustic lighting and stone fireplaces to wildlife artwork and natural materials, these ideas help transform a house in the mountains into a cozy retreat that feels connected to the outdoors.
